“Apaches Inaugurate the Healing of the Past and Honor the Future”

February 17, 2009 will be a day of celebrating the future as well as restoring a healing of historical past.  This will be a day filled with pride, coming together and
looking to our future as our Apache Nations join one another to honor our ancestors, our rich culture and our spirituality.

What started as the San Carlos Apache Tribal Council’s historical remembrance of Geronimo’s passing nearly 100 years ago has lead to a foresight that would
acknowledge the extreme hardships that our ancestors endured and what we as Apaches face today in protecting our way of life. There is no need to convince
anyone that the historical infiltration from the outside has impacted our way of life as well as our beliefs.  We have become divided and have drifted away from our
roots, our culture and our religious customs. We have fought among ourselves and never settled our differences. These unresolved differences have affected us
negatively. It is time we put these differences behind and begin to heal the wounds inflicted.

The memorializing and healing visionary concept followed up with official visits to each of the Apache Tribal leaderships in Arizona, New Mexico, and Oklahoma.  The
Apache tribal nations openly praised the San Carlos Apache Tribe for their courage in taking the lead in organizing a special event to come together as one Apache
nation of nations to respect our history, honor our warriors of past and present and most importantly begin to restore ourselves as nations prepared for the future.
Tribal Resolutions from each of the Apache Nations have been received including supporting the events including funding for the design and construction of a
memorial site that will honor the centennial anniversary of Geronimo’s passing reflecting the past history, present sovereignty and a secure future.  There is
legislation in U.S.Congress to recognize the resolution to commemorate the historic event.

The initiation of this visionary quest began in San Carlos at the start of 2009 with a sweat lodge ceremony by a group of Apache men who traveled from each of the
Apache Nations.  A 32 song blessing was held honoring the beginning of the occasion which instilled a healing process for the people and future generations of
Apache nations.  Since then, communication to the public has been on-going in addition to planning for the event to culminate on February 17, 2009 with food, song,
dance, and the unveiling of a specially designed sculpture that will reflect “The Apache People.”

This special forthcoming event welcomes all. Let’s come together as Apache Nations to encourage unity, strengthen our respect for one another and pay tribute to
our ancestors and move forward together prepared for our future.
